Kin actor Lloyd Cooney tackles the lead role in The Complex Dublin's forthcoming Irish stage premiere of Budd Schulberg’s On The Waterfront.
Directed by Vanessa Fielding, Lloyd plays the role of Terry Malloy, made immortal by Marlon Brando in the Oscar-winning film. The production will mark 70th anniversary of this iconic tale.
To mark the occasion,we asked Lloyd for his choice cultural picks...
FILM
I caught the Kneecap film in the IFI Cinema last week and it was some craic! Great to experience it with an audience and inspiring to see a film as Gaeilge do so well both here and abroad.
MUSIC
I have been listening to Romance by Fontaines DC on repeat since it’s come out and I’m loving it.

BOOK
I’ve read a few great books this year but the one that I couldn’t put down was Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. I can’t recommend it enough!

THEATRE
Quick plug for my play On The Waterfront at The Complex, but The Kiss by Jimmy Murphy is coming back to Bewley's Café Theatre in the new year. Jimmy is one of my favourite playwrights and this production had a great run at the Viking Theatre on its first outing, where Luke Griffin gave a masterful performance.
TV
I can’t say I’ve enjoyed The Bear as it’s quite an intense watch but it is a fantastic show; the writing and overall atmosphere created by everyone involved is compelling and a great watch if you’re in the right headspace.
GIG
I’d love to say I’m looking forward to the Oasis gigs next year but I was one of the many fans disappointed not to get tickets I haven’t given up all hope yet though. I did catch the punk band Idles last time they were Dublin, and they were epic.
ART
I was lucky enough to catch The High Strangeness exhibition by Lucy McKenna at Cabra Library this year. It explored mysterious light appearing in Irish landscapes and it was truly remarkable. I can’t wait to see what Lucy has in store next.

PODCAST
I’m really excited about the forthcoming podcast Saving The City from Una Mullally Andrea Horan and Lisa Fox. From what I hear it’s going to be a much needed and vital podcast about the erosion of the few sacred cultural spaces left in our city.

THE NEXT BIG THING...
Thommas Kane Byrne is an artist I’ve admired for many years - he is a young playwright and actor from Dublin's north inner city and someone who’s work always challenges and excites. He is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
