I've never told a soul how I came to almost cut off the tops of two fingers four days before Christmas of 1982. Until tonight.

I was trying to open a stubborn jam jar lid and I remembered seeing someone on television do so by violently stabbing the tip of the lid to release the pressure underneath. Unfortunately, the sharpest knife we had in the house was for spreading butter, and I had especially puny arms for a child of my age...
