Two weeks to go before Christmas, but the town was not as busy as you might expect. The Coal Quay was emptying quickly, the last few holly-sellers trying to get rid of their bundles before closing up, and everyone huddled up against the cold and encroaching darkness.

Because everyone was anxious, like people awaiting the arrival of a storm...
