Sunday Miscellany: Flights of Fancy by Zoë Devlin

From my seat in the DART, I gaze in anticipation, hoping to see them on the tidal flats at Booterstown. It is late September and they should be there, any day now – I've often seen them, gathered together, grazing on this wide expanse of wet sand, in large flocks or sometimes just a few.


Remarkable creatures, they're not much bigger than the ducks we fed as children in Stephen's Green and yet, small as they are, they make this incredible journey, every year, flying to Ireland from north-eastern Arctic Canada to spend winter here...
