It's the most wonderful time of the year… if you’re ghoulishly inclined.
Halloween is well and truly here, with some people getting into the spirit (pardon the pun) over the bank holiday weekend. We all know, however, that the most important part of Halloween is posting your costume online, hoping to get those sweet, sweet likes. If you’re still stuck for a truly memorable Halloween costume, let these Irish icons guide you to success this Oíche Shamhna.
Teresa Mannion and Anonymous Salthill Diver
A couples costume truly like no other. She's gone viral all over the world for her pleas to stay safe during weather warnings; he won’t stop jumping into the sea despite all sense of cop on. It’s a match made in heaven, honestly. All you really need is a raincoat and microphone for Teresa, and a dry robe for the swimmer. With this pair, no trip to a Halloween party is an unnecessary journey.
The Irish Olympic Team
They were the pride of Ireland this summer, and you could now be the pride of your friend's Halloween party this year. All you need is a green jacket, white trousers, and a fake medal, unless you managed to score the real deal in Paris. Don’t forget to accessorise as well to drive home which Olympian you’re dressing up as (swimming goggles for Daniel Wiffen, boxing gloves for Kellie Harrington, a full pommel horse for Rhys McCleneghan).
Mr Tayto
He's Ireland’s favourite dapper spud, and a style icon to boot. Striped trousers, a white shirt, blue tie, red jacket, and a dashing bowler hat is all you need to emulate the pioneer of the flavoured crisp (that’s a true fact, look it up). Don’t forget to stuff your pockets with the good stuff to make sure your costume is a winner with trick-or-treaters knocking on the door. Only one question remains; cheese and onion, or salt and vinegar?
Kneecap
With their biggest Irish date announced for next summer, and Oscar buzz surrounding their latest film, there is no better time to find a crew and dress up as Belfast’s favourite hip-hop export. A tracksuit and baseball cap are all you need to embrace your inner Móglaí Bap and Mo Chara, and you can find DJ Próvaí’s iconic tricolour balaclava if you know where to look. Just make sure you brush up on your cúpla focal before going out the door to fully engross yourself in the H.O.O.D lifestyle.
The Kabin Crew
Think you can stop people from dressing up as this crowd? I doubt it. They went mega-viral earlier this year with their hit The Spark, which was recently longlisted for a Grammy award. The inspirational youngsters are easy enough to emulate, fashion-wise; as much neon as you can humanly wear should do the trick. What will be harder to replicate will, of course, be their nonstop energy. If you manage to emulate even half of what the kids from Cork and Clare can do, you’re sure to be the life and soul of the party.
